attar: tools for sustainable living  עתר

attar is a spiritually-grounded, community-based approach to sustainability that engages the Jewish community in reimagining the world we want to live in. By combining text study, innovative ritual practice, and sustainable living skill development, our programs inspire and give us the skills to shift our behaviors towards more sustainable practices in a way that is hopeful and enduring.

attar seeks to shift behavioral patterns that close us off from natural interconnections while opening up channels of creativity and imagination. We envision the day when a diverse, vibrant and joyful Jewish community comes together to passionately work towards a more hopeful and sustainable future.

attar is a biblical Hebrew word referring to prayer or plea. It is also the word used for pitchfork or plow. All of these are tools used for turning: prayer turns us toward our highest values; a plow turns over the earth to reveal the rich, fertile soil underneath. We use attar to refer to the tools, both Jewish and environmental, that we have to turn ourselves and our communities toward more sustainable practices.

attar is currently piloting its first workshop: Wisdom and Worms: The Torah of Composting
